Both being from Michigan, it took going to The University at Buffalo in Buffalo, NY for the chance to play Division I athletics for us to meet and our love story to begin. Moving 300 miles away from home took a leap of faith and left both of us with a craving for coney dogs and familiarity. Luckily, within the first week of preseason we were fortunate to meet through the best man, Dalton, also a fellow Michigander and instantly hit it off.
By October of 2010, Jake and I were officially dating. The next four years we took on college together, supporting one another every chance we got at volleyball and football games being one another’s biggest cheerleaders. Through road trips home we got to grow closer to one another’s families and could understand where each other’s “crazy” stemmed from. Those four years allowed us to grow as a couple and also as individuals, which was crucial for life after graduation.
Once we both graduated from Buffalo I took a recruiting position in Royal Oak and Jake signed a contract with the RedBlacks to play football in the CFL. Instead of being 300 miles from home together, we would be 860 kilometers apart. One thing we learned was if we could survive a long distance relationship, our relationship could handle anything.
Now for the important part, how did Jake propose?! Since we spend 7 months apart a year the talk of getting engaged was a hot top-bottomic. May 8th, 2016, Mother’s Day, marks the day Jake got down on one knee. Jake took me to Belle Isle to a beautiful pier on the Detroit River where we sat and talked until another group of people came down the dock. We asked them to take a picture of us and as I went to grab the camera back Jake asked them for one last picture and Jake got down on one knee and pulled out the ring. I don't think I could have said yes soon enough! I cried, we kissed, and he put the ring on my finger.
We eventually left Belle Isle, as an engaged couple! On our way home we filled in both of our families and friends of the amazing news and were showered with love and support from every last one of them. Now we officially get to spend the rest of our lives together and we could not be more excited!
We cannot wait to have you there to celebrate this love story with us!
